How a domain availability check actually works
Plenty of "domain checkers" simply look for a website at the address. That is wrong surprisingly often: millions of registered domains have no site at all. Here is what happens when you press Forge.

Rules for a domain that works
- Keep it under 15 characters; under 10 is better for spoken recommendations.
- Skip hyphens and numbers: people will say "the one with the dash" once and then forget.
- Pass the radio test: if you hear it, can you type it first time?
- Match your business name exactly, or add a short verb prefix (get, try, use) rather than a random suffix.

Which extension should you choose?

Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the domain availability check?
We ask each registry's official RDAP server whether the domain exists. That is the same source registrars use, so "Available" is reliable at the moment of checking. Premium-priced and registry-reserved names can still appear available; the registrar shows the real price at checkout.
Which extensions do you check?
The generator checks .com, .io, .app, .net and .co for every name. The business name checker adds .ai, .org and .shop.
Is .com still worth it?
.com is still the extension most people type by default, which matters for word-of-mouth. If the .com is taken, .co and .io are widely accepted for startups and .app for software. Avoid an extension that a direct competitor owns the .com of.
Does checking a domain here reserve it or tip off anyone?
No. We do not reserve domains, and lookups go straight to the registries, not to a registrar that could see your searches. Register quickly once you decide, because we cannot hold names for you.
